As I was just in Germany visiting family and eating all the foods I don't usually get at home (nothing beats fresh baked German bread. Oh my!), I wanted to share with you how I survive the Holidays or any time of the year when eating too much starts to feel like the norm.
MY HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GUIDE
Here’s the thing: treat meals are totally okay and actually really good for you as they eliminate the mentality of restriction. In fact, they're really healthy because they keep the idea of restriction down. It’s the dieting mentality that has let us to believe that treat meals are awful and that you should feel super guilty about eating something ‘outside of your diet plan’. Forget that. Healthy eating is about the sum of all things and not about that one meal at which you ate too much of a good thing.
The thing I dislike about big events like that though are the feeling of overeating that you’re left with the next day, especially if the overeating has happened over more than just one meal or day…(I’m currently visiting my mom and grandparents in Germany and it’s like overeating bonanza over here).
In that case, I love giving my body a little break, I guess you could call it a mini reset. What does a mini reset look like? Green smoothie for breakfast, soup for lunch and then a very veg-heavy dinner in the evening (such as roast veggies and a protein).
Can’t do a full day of resetting (like me right now)? Then just do what you can. I have soup in the evening and on evenings when we go out, I’ll just follow up with a green smoothie for breakfast the next day. It's all about balance.
WORDS OF WISDOM:
Consider not only how much you eat but also what and how you eat it.
Give this super green and anti-inflammatory green smoothie a try. The digestive enzymes in pineapple can work wonders!
Avocado Kale Smoothie
There’s a whole list of delicious soups that I share in my free 10-Day Detox Guide so why don’t you just go ahead and download that to make things easier. I suggest you pick one and make a triple batch of it to store in the freezer for whenever you need another mini reset during the holidays.
Does that take the scary factor out of the Holydays a little bit? If you have your personal tips to share, just hit reply and let me know. I always love hearing from you!
Big hug coming your way,
Natalie McCrae R.H.N.
