Detox comes in many shapes and sizes. Before you embark on your New Year's detox of choice, I want to share a bit of a detox 101 with you here as I believe there are a lot of misconceptions about what detox is and how it should be done out there.
Your body detoxifies every. single. day. every. single. moment. Whether you're drinking that green juice and detox tea or not. This innate ability is what keeps us alive and healthy.
A lot of people label cleanses and detoxes as unnecessary because of this. What do I think? I know for a fact that we can support our body's ability to detoxify in many different ways.
What does that mean?
Let me paint a picture for you that will make this easier to understand.
Your body has many organs that help it detoxify: skin (sweat) , kidneys (urine), lungs (breath), intestine (bowel movements) and the main organ being the liver (toxin excretion occurs through bile into the intestines).
Now imagine those organs are your to-do list. We're all familiar with this right? Then you also know how easy it is to pile something new onto the list and how much effort it takes for you to wrap your head around and deal with a task in order to be able to mark it as complete.
This is what happens to our organs on a daily basis. We inhale dirty air just by walking down the street (even worse if you work in a salon, factory or anywhere they like to pile on the air freshener), we apply toxic chemicals to our skin and hair through cosmetics, even clothing or just through touch without even thinking of it.
And then there's the food. No, eating at McDonals once is not going to kill you, but what if you do it every day? And in addition, eat pesticide laden vegetables or drink milk and eat meat that is full of added hormones and antibiotics? And what about all those ingredients in the packaged foods we eat that we can't even pronounce? The list goes on, but I think you get the point.
It all adds up. We do all the above, we do it at least 3 times a day, 365 days a year and in portions that go way beyond the calories we require to get through the day.
The cherry on the cake: most of us sleep less than 6 hours a night. While we sleep, our detoxification organs are working even harder than during the day to remove all the gunk we consumed at night (why we have bowel movements in the morning, clear out throat up waking, remove white film from the inside of our mouth, or remove sleep from our eyes). All signs of your body's detoxification system having been active while your were counting sheep.
What a wonderful body we have, wouldn't you agree?
So what can we do?
Pfew, all the above just to clarify this point. Detox can look different for all of us.
Basically, by reducing any of the above, you are already helping your body to detoxify as it will be able to start reducing it's to-do list as not as much gunk was coming in as before.

There is no need to do them all at once. Pick one and focus on making it a daily healthy habit.
