The first thing that comes to mind when you think of detoxing or cleansing is juices, fasting and hunger. This is not true! Did you know that your body cleanses on a daily basis? That’s one of the many, many things your liver does constantly. Non-stop. These cleansing mechanisms increase in the Spring and Fall, usually kicking into full gear in Spring.
So why even consider cleansing, you ask? Our livers tend to be overburdened due to increased pollution in the air and toxins that we unknowingly (and knowingly) ingest through our food, drinking water and any other products we use or wear in our day to day activities.
All of this has to leave our body once again, but not before it’s not filtered out by our hardworking liver. The problem: our exposure to toxins has increased drastically. On top of this, we tend to consume too much food and don’t get enough sleep. This means that instead of cleaning, our liver is working overtime to assimilate the foods that we eat.
Improving your diet and eating habits is therefore of great importance when it comes to cleaning house, but I’ve put together a list of other options that can serve as a great support to our already amazing cleansing system. The best thing about them, you can do them all before you even have breakfast!
Start your simple daily detox with these 5 steps:
1. SCRAPE THAT TONGUE
Before you do anything else, scrape your tongue with a tongue scraper or a tablespoon. Your body has worked hard all night to remove unwanted substances. You don’t want to undo all its hard work by gulping it down again with a glass of water.
2. OIL PULLING
In order to save time, I recommend you do this while you shower. Otherwise, the 15 minutes of pulling can seem like an eternity. Feel free to prep your coffee or get your glass of water set up to drink after you’ve brushed your teeth while you swish the oil around in your mouth. Basically, do whatever you need to do to meet the 15-minute mark of oil pulling. Any little distraction can help kill time!
3. BRUSH YOUR TEETH
After spitting out the oil, there might be some residue left over in your mouth that will need some extra help to be removed. Don’t swallow it. Make sure to brush your teeth thoroughly and rinse out with water. Whenever you’re not oil pulling in the mornings (I tend to do it for one month, on and off) brushing your teeth before you consume any beverage or food can also help.
4. DRY BRUSH
Before you jump under the warm shower, dry brush your body from toe to heart andarms to heart in circular motions. This will get your lymph flowing in the early morning, supporting further toxic removal. Bonus: your skin will be exfoliated at the same time!
5. WARM WATER WITH LEMON JUICE
Make it a tall glass of water. This will get your system started and your liver active. Feel your cells soaking up the water as you drink the glass, it will fill you with energy and should help get your bowel movement going.
There you go. You’ve already helped your body detox with 5 small activities before you even had breakfast! It might seem like a lot at first glance, but they are quick tasks that can add up to a lot if done on a daily basis. Plus you’re only incorporating them into activities that you already do on a daily basis, so there really shouldn’t be any excuses to not do them! After all, your body deserves a little bit of loving attention.
